Get Ready, the Wisconsin Sales Tax Holiday is 8/1 to 8/5

Wisconsin will feature a Sales Tax Holiday from August 1st to August 5th. This tax free holiday features numerous items that are timely for back to school shopping. The various categories of tax exempt items include: clothing $75 or less per item (boots, coats, jackets, dresses, jeans, shoes, and more), computers for personal use under $750 (desktop, laptops, notebook computers, and tablets), school supplies $75 or less per item, as well as school computer supplies for personal use under $250 (computer printers, computer storage, printer supplies, and more).

Thankfully, retailers do not have to collect exemption certificates for items that qualify for the sales tax holiday. But, as a reminder, all retailers must participate in the sales tax holiday.

For your accounting records, retailers should include all exempt sales made during the sales tax holiday in the total sales amount on Line 1 of the Wisconsin Sales and Use Tax Return (Form ST-12). These exempt sales are included on Line 3, “Sales of exempt property and services,” that get subtracted from total sales.
